Lake Gatun, the artificial fresh water body linking through locks the Pacific with the Atlantic Oceans, offers a sureal view of large sea vessels crossing in a tropical central american landscape.

These rusted canon once protected the spanish fort of San Lorenzo  from any invasion from land or sea. They are now a reminder of a Panama that no longer exist, the Panama of the Spaniards and of the greater Columbia.

The Spaniards realized the strategic importance of Panama early in the 16th century, and they established military outpost to allow for the transfer of gold and precious cargo from their Pacific fleet to their Atlantic fleet. The ruins of Fort San Lorenzo shown on this picture date back to the 16th century and were declared a world heritage by the UNESCO in 1983.
