Pristine-light > Fort San Lorenzo The Spaniards realized the strategic importance of Panama early in the 16th century, and they established military outpost to allow for the transfer of gold and precious cargo from their Pacific fleet to their Atlantic fleet. The ruins of Fort San Lorenzo shown on this picture date back to the 16th century and were declared a world heritage by the UNESCO in 1983.
