Wouldn't you agree that family pictures are some of the most important things in life? For instance, this shot, taken in 1974, is a family scene where my dad, my late grand-father, my aunt, my mom and myself enjoy our first Christmas together. Priceless!
Unfortunately, this shot has suffered a lot. If you click on it and look at it closely, time and scanning has tinted the shot in yellow and red, and scratches are present everywhere.
This shot is clearly a candidate for photo retouching.
AFTER
Look how cleaning up the dust and scratches and working on color correction makes a huge difference! The shot now looks as if it had been taken yesterday. In fact, it probably is even better than the original!
BEFORE
This is a good example of a picture that needs a lot of attention. First, the horizon is tilted. Then, the colors are washed out, in particular the sky. The skin tones are partially burned. Finally, the background is plain ugly, in particular the floating crane.
AFTER
All of this can be fixed by digitally improving the shot: the horizon was tilted back to horizontal, colors were corrected and saturated, a lot of attention was paid to the sky to make it less grayish. Finally, the background was blurred to simulate a large lens aperture (portrait mode) and concentrate the viewer's attention on the boat and the two children. Improved, isn't it?
BEFORE
Even black and white picture can benefit from enhencement. This shot lacks contrast and is flat. Besides, a couple flecks ruin it.
AFTER
Again, improving the contrast makes a world of difference: check it for yourself, which shot do you prefer? And this could also work with your 100 years old pictures if you have any!
BEFORE
My next example is a shot from 1976 featuring my (then) young dad. Cool shot, except that time has turned the photographic chemicals into yellows, and it does look like the shot is from the 70's. Yuk!
AFTER
Retouching the shot has revealed the true colors, and this young guy looks like he is ready to go out tonight. I should just warn him to change his haircut and the shirt, so not cool nowadays!

BEFORE
This is the last of my family shot to illustrate the power of digital retouching. This picture dates back to 1980. This shot is priceless, because I am featured here (on the right) with my grand-ma, my three brothers and my dad. But look how tarnished the colors are, and how many dust and scratch marks are visible. To make matter worse, the film used must have been relatively cheap, because it has lots of noise and the emulsion looks very grainy.
AFTER
Though it took some effort, retouching the shot has truly improved over the original! The dust and scratch marks are now removed, the colors are corrected, and what's more I digitally reduced the coarsness of the grain. It is now trully a familly gem, and it shows that digital retouching has no limits!
