Rare encounter
Appearing suddenly on the horizon is the silhouette of the USS Oriskany, a Vietnam-days aircraft carrier. The 888-foot, rusted ship is seen here towed to Beaumont, Texas, to ride out the hurricane season at the Maritime Administration Reserve Fleet Facility. The relocation is the latest in a long string of delays in making the Oriskany the first Naval vessel and largest ship to be sunk intentionally as an artificial reef.
